Surrogate’s Corner: 5 Signs You’d Make a Great Surrogate
Do you have what it takes?
Qualifications to become a surrogate are pretty standard across the board. You may qualify on paper, but is surrogacy right for you? Yesenia is back with five common traits of a great surrogate!
1. You love being pregnant.
This one seems obvious. If pregnancy is easy for you or you love being pregnant, becoming a surrogate is a beautiful way to be pregnant once again. I loved being pregnant and after completing my family, part of me was a little sad at the thought of never being pregnant again. My husband and I were content with our two children, but this provided me the opportunity to carry another pregnancy while helping another family at the same time!
2. You are a great communicator.
Imagine being an intended parent and trusting your child to a complete stranger! Communicating well with the IPs can help them feel more connected throughout the journey. I spoke with my IPs regularly and provided updates along the way. I shared how I was feeling, unique cravings, big kicks/movements, as well as prompt updates after every doctor’s appointment. (Sometimes communication about certain topics can be difficult. Don’t worry, Brownstone can assist with all of those harder conversations).
3. Needles are no big deal.
Most medication protocols for gestational carriers include lots and lots of shots! Typically a GC will have daily hormone injections for about 10-12 weeks. While they can be intimidating, the hardest part is getting through the mental hurdle. The shots themselves aren’t actually too bad.
4. Your family is supportive.
Let’s be honest, even the most uneventful pregnancies can have some challenging days. I was exhausted during my first trimester! Luckily, my husband, family, and friends were able to step in and pick up my slack with our family when I needed some extra rest.
5. You love helping others.
People have many motivations for becoming a surrogate, my biggest was the desire to help another family. Many intended parents turn to surrogacy after years of infertility, while others just cannot biologically carry their child. Becoming a surrogate allows you to help someone’s dreams of a family come to fruition. What a gift!
